HISTORY OF JAVA

The Java programming language was originally developed by James Gosling, a computer scientist, while at Sun Microsystems (since acquired by Oracle Corporation). The goal of Java was to have a modern, object-oriented language with minimal dependencies that can run on any type of computer through the use of a Virtual Machine. Once a Virtual Machine is established on any type of computer, programs written in Java would run on that computer without being recompiled. The first intended use for Java was to run on interactive Cable TV devices, but the language was too advanced for the cable television industry at that time. Sun Microsystems released the first public implementation of Java in 1995. The rapid growth of the Internet in the late 1990s drove the growth of Java as it was well suited for the development and operation of enterprise web applications. From November 2007 through May 2008 Sun Microsystems released Java as open source software under the GNU General Public Licenss (GPL). Java remains a "de facto" standard, controlled thorugh the Java Community Process. The language has thrived under this process, with the latest specification, Java EE 6, being recognized as the premier platform for Enterprise applications. Java software runs on data center servers, laptops, gaming consoles, supercomputers, special purpose devices, and billions of mobile phones. There are numeroous reasons for the success and popularity of Java. Some of the widely recognized reasons are as follows:

  • Vast Infrastructure of People - The Java infrastructure goes beyond the thousands of commercial and open source tools and libraries available. Many thousands of experienced Java programmers and engineers can be found to tackle any computing challenge using the language.
  • IDEs - Several powerful Integrated Development Environments exist for Java, which reduces the complexity of programming, and greatly increased programmer productivity.
  • Language Support - The benefits of the Java runtime environment are available even to non-Java programmers. Programming support extends to many popular languages including, Ruby, Python, Groovy, Scala, Clojure, and more.
  • Mobile - Java is the most popular language for the rapidly growing mobile device market, including powering Google's Android devices.
  • Extensive Libraries - the ecosystem of Java libraries is huge
  • Stable - Java continues to advance, but incrementally. Careful attention is paid to ensure that enterprise applications running on Java are not disrupted by rapid change.
  • Scalable - As some rapidly growing Internet companies have discovered, Java is scalable and designed to be programmed for and deployed in a Cloud environment.
