| Announcements Ruby on Rails FastCGI Update Recently, some eApps customers have mentioned having difficulty enabling FastCGI for their Ruby on Rails applications. FastCGI is a language independent, webserver-independent, scalable, open extension to CGI that provides high performance without the limitations of server specific APIs. In order to make this component of Rails easier to enable, the application development team has released a new version of Ruby on Rails that simplifies the process. Enabling FastCGI is now as simple as editing a couple of lines in your application's .htaccess file. For complete instructions on this procedure, please see our user guide at http://support.eapps.com/hsp/rails under the section entitled "Using FastCGI". Remember, Ruby on Rails is only available for customers on our CentOS operating system plans. You are on the Fedora operating system plan if Ruby on Rails isn't present when you try to install new applications. If you are on the Fedora OS and want to try Rails, contact sales@eapps.com. |

Tech Tips Your Life in Subversion Joey Hess wrote a great article over at OnLamp, (http://www.onlamp.com/pub/a/onlamp/2005/01/06/svn_homedir.html) about keeping his personal home directory in a subversion repository. Some of the major advantages of such a setup include, history, distributed backups, and the ability to download your files to any computer on which you're working. Let's say you wanted to check out all of your important emails or documents to a Subversion repository on your VPS. Because we run nightly backups on all eApps systems, your sensitive data will be automatically backed up for you without having to do a thing except commit the files to your repository. And no matter what system you're working on, be it Linux or Windows, at home or the office, as long as you can run a SVN client, you will have access to your data. Best of all, the exact directory structure you're most familiar with will be kept intact. If you are interested in setting up a similar system for yourself, check out our newly released (and easy to follow) Subversion User Guide at http://support.eapps.com/hsp/svn. |

Tech News Google's Source Code Search Engine Earlier this month, the folks at Google announced a new project known as Code Search. Developers will now be able to use the familiar Google search interface to search through billions of lines of publicly available code, in hopes of isolating elements that can be reused in their own projects. The service, which started as a way for Google employees to search internal company code, has been opened up for testing at http://google.com/codesearch. The service searches popular code repositories such as CVS and SVN as well as indexing several smaller open source code search systems. |
