eApps' Uptream Data Center Increases Backbone Circuit
Our data center provider, Quality Technology Services (QTS), upgraded their connection to Internap, one of the premier Internet backbone providers. The connection was increased from an OC3 to an OC-192 (10 GB). This is the fastest connection commonly available on the Internet.

This is good news for eApps customers because Internap is our primary feed. This upgrade signals the confidence QTS has in Internap and strengthens the relationship between our two most important upstream providers.

eApps Breaks Monthly Sales Record
In October, eApps Hosting achieved its best monthly sales growth since the inception of its hosting operation. Rick Lingsch, President of eApps states, "The hosting industry is very volatile with many opportunistic, risk taking hosting providers. Our strategy is to grow steadily, to ensure that we continue to provide consistent, reliable service. Our customers vote with their dollars, and we are fortunate to have their support, as evidenced by our best sales month ever."
Tech Tips
Securing Email with SSL/TLS
Email is one of the most common activities we engage in on the Internet, although it is also one of the most insecure. Growing concerns over privacy and information theft have increased the need for a reliable security solution. Wikipedia defines secure email as "E-mail traversal over-the-wire secured by encryption as set forth in Internet mail standards, such as Transport Layer Security (TLS) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)." But how would one go about encrypting email? It's easy with the help of eApps technicians. Several of our team members with an eye for security have published a user guide describing how to do just that. If you are interested in setting up secure email, check out our newly released user guide at http://support.eapps.com/hsp/tls.
Recent Application Updates
New Versions of JBoss, Subversion and phpMyAdmin Released

JBoss -- eApps releases JBoss version 4.0.5. This version fixes over 100 known bugs since version 4.0.4, as well as adding over 30 new requested features. See the detailed release notes for more information.

Subversion -- Subversion 1.4 is a superset of all previous Subversion releases, and is considered the current "best" release. Anything in previous versions is also in 1.4, but 1.4 contains features and bug fixes not present in any earlier release. Check out the release notes here.

phpMyAdmin -- phpMyAdmin has been upgraded to version 2.9.0.2. The changelog found here reflects the updates and bug fixes in the code.

SQLite -- SQLite has been upgraded to the latest version, 3.3.8 over the previously available 3.3.5. The changelog found here details the changes such as minor bug fixes and performance enhancements.
Getting the Most from the Virtuozzo Power Panel - Using the Built in SSH Client
Even though the Virtuozzo Power Panel is included by default with all new virtual private servers, many eApps customers have yet to realize everything it can be used for. The Power Panel allows you to view detailed resource usage statistics, manage files, and analyze traffic logs. This month's tech tip tells you how to use the built in SSH client. SSH, or secure shell, is a network protocol that allows establishing a secure, encrypted channel between a local and a remote computer.

To use the Virtuozzo Power Panel, click its link from your control panel, or add :4643 to the end of your default domain, i.e. http://your-domain.com:4643. The default login ID is "root" with your root password. (If necessary, you can change your root password in Users area of the System Tab). To use SSH from here, click "SSH connection" on the left hand side. Again you will be prompted to enter your username and password. If this is the first time you've attempted to access SSH this way, your browser may prompt you to install additional components. After this, an SSH terminal window will open and you will be able to issue Linux shell commands to your VPS.

Normally, we would recommend that our customers use a program called PuTTY for establishing SSH connections to their servers. However, using the Virtuozzo Power Panel for SSH can be useful if you're working from a computer that doesn't have PuTTY installed.

Increase Exposure to Your Site
Over the next few weeks, eApps will be redesigning our website. This includes updating the portfolio of customers whose sites we host. If you are interested in being linked from eapps.com, we would be delighted to include a link to your site in our Customer Portfolio area. This is a great opportunity to increase traffic to your site! If you are interested, send an email to sales@eapps.com with the subject PORTFOLIO and a short description of your site.
