Postini SPAM Filtering Service Update
Last month we reported that eApps Hosting will be using Postini to filter inbound mail for SPAM. Postini is one of the most effective and easy to use SPAM filtering services available. Once we have the automated interface in place, all customers that use eApps DNS service will be converted automatically. There will be a manual option for customers that do not use eApps DNS.
We previously announced that we would be imposing a per mailbox fee for each mailbox that a customer has over and above a specific allowance for each plan. We have reconsidered this pricing change and have decided that we will not impose a per mailbox fee at this time. Even though we will be paying Postini a high fee each month based on the number of mailboxes running on our service, we have decided to proceed with the Postini SPAM filter service without imposing a surcharge. We reserve the right to change our pricing policy in the future. At this time we are finishing the development and testing of the automated interface. You will be receiving an announcement in the next few days, which will also be posted on our support site, that explains more about the new service, including the following:
- when Postini will be implemented and how it will impact you
- how to use Postini
- how to opt out of Postini
- how to use Postini if you do not use eApps DNS
- option for administering Postini for your domain
eApps Visits Europe in March
Each year a conference called WebHostingDay is held in Cologne, Germany. The event is billed as the largest of its kind in Europe. eApps will be there on March 12 and 13, 2008! A representative from our headquarters and one of our staff from our Romanian office will be attending. After the conference, we will be visiting data centers in Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, and Amsterdam. This trip is part of our efforts to learn more about the hosting industry in Europe and locate a data center for our first international expansion location. If you are planning to attend the conference, or are located in one of the cities we will be visiting, drop us a line. Maybe we can catch up.

Promotion
In conjunction with the launching of our new hosting plans based on CentOS 5, we have updated a number of our User Guides. We also have written User Guides for several new applications that we now offer, including Icecast, Drupal, WordPress, Xwindows, and more. We try our best to provide good documentation, but we need your help to make it better. We know your time is valuable so we are offering a $10 credit for each useful feedback item you send us regarding our User Guides.
Just send an email to sales@eapps.com with the subject "$10 Bounty for User Guide Feedback" and specify your domain so we can find your account. Your feedback can be a suggestion for improvement, correction of an error, mention of a bad link, etc. We will reply with a confirmation that your account was credited for each useful feedback item that is accepted. This promotion applies only to feedback on our User Guides, is valid through March 31, 2008 and has a limit of $50 in credits per customer.
New Application Versions
CentOS 5 Plans are Launched!
Fire the cannons, let the trumpets blare, may the festivities begin! The CentOS 5 plans are launched! Seriously, this is a big deal. Perhaps you have been wondering what is taking us so long to change out an operating system. Well, here is the short story.
We manage the hosting service using vendor software from a company called Parallels, formerly SWSoft. This is an excellent company. One of the reasons they are excellent is that they strive to improve every day. Last year they provided us with a revamped approach to delivering applications to your VPS service, using a new tool they call EZ Templates. This tool allows us to provide the operating system and all applications using RPM, the mainstream way to package and install applications. The bottom line is this, we can now offer new applications and up-to-date versions in days rather than weeks. Under the new approach we have built our own RPM repository of the applications you use, which we support and pledge to you to keep as up-to-date as possible. In addition to up-to-date versions of all the applications we offer and a significantly improved PHP and Ruby on Rails, the new plans offer the following new applications:
- WordPress
- Drupal
- SquirrelMail (replaces Roundcube)
- ImageMagick
- GD Graphics Library
- Icecast (replaces SHOUTcast)
- XWindows (xorg-x11) with VNC remote access
Control Panel Now Shows Memory Usage
We are pleased to report that the Control Panel now shows a memory usage meter. Please log into your Control Panel, click on the System tab, and look to the left. You will see a memory usage meter that shows your usage as a percentage of your total allocation. PLEASE NOTE: if you are near 100% you may need to optimize your site or upgrade your plan. It is important that you keep a buffer of free memory during peak usage because your site can crash or perform unreliably when you hit your memory limit.
CoyotePoint Load Balancing Coming Soon!
Now that we have our new plans out, we are moving forward with other plans to offer you the best and most effective hosting service money can buy. One of our next offerings will be an economical load balancing service, using CoyotePoint products, for high availability sites. We have just begun the development and testing phase but expect to offer the service sometime by the end of March. Keep your eye out for news on this excellent service.
